HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN WIFI POWER STRIP

I wanted to find a way to make my apartment smart without investing a lot of money. That’s why I have decided to make a wifi power strip that I can control over my phone. In this instructable, you will learn to build a wifi power strip and make any device smart while controlling it from your cellphone.

Step 2: Supplies

Step 1 Get all of the materials in the list.

Power Strip

4 channel relay

Wifi arduino controller (ESP8266 ESP-12E NodeMCU Using Arduino IDE)

Step 3: Dismantel the power strip.

Dismantel the power strip.

Cut the metal gold strip between the plugs to separate the conection in order to control them independently.

This part is tricky. Be extra careful when plugin in to the wall.

First grab the in cable from the wall and add 4, 16 gage wires. Connect 4 wires to 3 plugs on the same side and 1 usb side.

Connect 4, 16 gage to the other side of the 3 plugs and the usb wire.

Connect those four wires to the relay slots. Use only the sides on the relay.

Connect 4 wires to the other side of the relay and then to the 16 gage wire that goes to the wall.

Finally connect the ground to the ground in the wire that goes to the wall.

Step 5: Connecting to the ESP8266 ESP-12E NodeMCU Using Arduino IDE

Download the softwares for the wifi board.

Use the 5v to power the relay.

Use d1-d4 to control the relays.

Ground from the relay to ground from the wifi board.

All set!

Wifi Power Strip

So I cut the connection between every plug to make them individual. There is one for the USB connectors to the left, you can see a blue and red cable coming out and then the plugs, I cut the metal strip that connected them to make them individual plugs. Then, I connect each plug to 1 of the relays including the usb connectors and I plug the Relay to the wifi controller and Vuala, I have my smart power strip!

HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN POWER STRIP.

Step 1

Get all of the materials in the list.

  1. Power Strip
  2. 4 channel relay
  3. Wifi arduino controller

Step 2 – Dismantel the power strip.

Step 3 – Cut the metal gold strip between the plugs to separate the conection in order to control them independently.

Step 4

  1. Connect 1 side to all positive, in this case blue and the other side negative. Then plug in the positives to the positives in the 4 channel relay and the negatives in the negatives.

Finally plug the ground into one of the 4 channel since the ground is shared by all them and connect the 4 channels to the wifi controller.

Now you have to figure out the code!

PillowFlash

This project consists on a pillow that lights up in the dark but turns on when you place your head on the pillow. The sensor works on preassure and it has to be set to turn off when their is preassure and more conductive fiber connections and set to turn on when there is less preassure and less fiber connections. On step 1 I got the lights to turn on but not really to control them and the sensor doesn’t really work. Here is trial 1. Ill keep adding my posts as progress is achieved.

Pillow Flash

This product is for night walkers and people who don’t like waking up in the dark. Basically the pillow has a sensor that when you place your head the lights turn off but when you lift up your head the pillow lights up. In my personal experience I wake up in the middle of the night and I am still half asleep so going back to my bed from the kitchen or bathroom sometimes can be a bit confusing or I bump into my bed because it is the darkest place of the house. Therefore the idea here would be for the actual pillow to guide you to your bed with lights.

From last week to this week many things changed. One of the major challenges was to get the amount of light necessary for the pillow at night when there are no lights. To do this I actually added some extra layers of cloth inside the pillow to diminish the light brightness and get the effect I was going for. Also the first circuit I made had too much power so I diminished the power of the lights by adding resistors with every light. Here is the product itself.

 

Bed Time

I hate waking up in the middle of the night and not been able to see anything. Thats why i created a pillow that lights up when you lift your head!

Week 4 Heartattack!

The idea behind the heart is that connected to arduino you can make it vibrate. So when I squeeze it, someone who has the other heart would feel it vibrate or it would vibrate according to my squeezes. This way that person far away would know you are thinking about her/him. 

Also its very aerodynamic. You can use it as a boomerang or ninja stars to represent a heart “attack” but it doesnt hurt. So you can poke someone with it just to make a joke!
